【The ideas of speaking different languages】
If I didn t choose an architect as myoccupation, I might not go out from Japan. In the workplace, we use drawings, physical models and CGs as our architectural common languages which helped me a lot when I had a trouble with my English skill in earlier days in the U.K. When communicating with contractors and engineers on site, it requires a total language skill such as instantaneousness, expression, eye-contact and timing. However, I couldn t learn those skills without frustration at work and on my daily life.
Since working in non-Japanese environment, I have emphasized to uselanguages more than before. I couldn t write down the numbers on the phones and raised my left hand with saying "Right". There were many discrepancies between my ideas and actions.
Japanese is called an ambiguous language. We don t need to expressesand understand everything under rhythmic, "A and UN" breathing. The words include rhyme and blank. Eventually, I arrived at a single common fact that the Japanese language is only for the single race, Japanese. Therefore, this language has depth and can create the art of Haiku which has a limit number of letters and restriction of seasonal words.
On the other hand, in my opinion, English is the simple and functional language. However, it wasn t clear enough if I used it same way as Japanese when I started living in the U.K. I believe that we have to use the different languages with other sense and attitude from our mother tongue.
When my language was only Japanese before coming to the U.K., I didn t pay much attention of my daily words. Since, however, I started living with English in the U.K., I have been aware of using languages including even Japanese. Moreover, it has an influence on not only the languages but also my creative ideas.
