Outline of the city with intensity On the river side on Thames, the unique shape construction site appeared in the financial area, Bank.
The office building nicknamed "Walkie-Talkie" will join the skyline of London. It is designed by the Argentinean architect, Rafael Vinoly who also worked on "Tokyo International Forum" in Japan. Although the shape of "Shard", the tallest building in Europe, designed by Renzo Piano which has just completed recently, is flared, the idea of this buildingis upside down. The floor spaces are increased by 25 % on every floor. The well-known buildings, "Lloyd's of London" designed by Lord. Richard Rogers in the 20 century and the other famous building called,“Gherkin" by Sir. Norman Foster, drew the skylines of this financial city.
In my early days in the U.K., I saw the construction site of Gherkin from the other side of River Thames during my commuting. That was really awkward view which the bullet form structure gradually raised above the historical city. I remember that there were many opinions of like and dislike among my colleagues when the building completed.
However, over time, Gherkin became the fundamental element in this city. The building is now one of famous icons ofLondon, such as the red phone box, double-decker bus, Big Ben and the flow line of River Thames. People all over the world are able to recognise the city of London by these icons without words.
The skyscrapers are outlines of the city. The outlines are required "intensity" to be icons of city. They form the unique shape building for creating the new trend rather than chasing the trend by someone else. I was thinking about these ideas by the book, "Outline of Design" written with poetic and philosophical words by Naoto Fukasawa, Japanese product designer.
This building, "Walkie-Talkie" will be completed by 2014. It must be going to arouse again another interest. The cosmopolitan city, London is good at producing the iconic buildings. In other words, people come from all over the worldgive pressure and intensity to form the outlines of icons.
