2011年後半から欧州経済が悪化し、その影響で英国の我が社でもクビ切りが始まった。契約社員は次々と社を後にし、正社員も恐々とし始める。そんな中、不敵な笑みの上司が僕の席にやってきて言った。「あなたの次のプロジェクトはオリンピックの現場」　

実務経験もなく、英語の話せなかった僕は模型場から現事務所に潜り込んだ。そこではオリンピック誘致のための巨大な2000分の1マスタープラン模型を黙々と作っていた。そして、05年7月6日、誰もが予想しなかったオリンピックがこの街にやってくることになる。設計士になっても、直接関わることはなかったが、同僚たちからオリンピックに関われる喜びや大きなプロジェクトゆえの難しさ、不満に耳を傾けていた。
史上3度目となるロンドンオリンピックは地域開発を兼ねた市の東部地区をメーン会場とする。また、エコを目指した大会らしくバッキンガム宮殿前のビーチバレー会場、ハイドパークのサーペンタイン池で遠泳など敷地条件を生かした面白い会場が市内に点在する。
僕が担当するのは経線ゼロ度で有名なグリニッジ天文台公園を敷地とする乗馬場と近代五種競技会場。大会が終われば現状復帰を目指すための調整に追われる。クロスカントリーコースとなる高低差のある公園を通り雨を何度も浴びながら馬の気持ちになって歩き回る。夏の緑が映える英国の公園を疾走するのはさぞかし気持ちいいことだろう。
英国は国全体としてオリンピックへの盛り上がりに欠けると言われる。本当だろうか。そうではなく、はっきりと「興味がある」「ない」を言える個人がいるのだと思う。国を挙げての世界的祭典があっても、それに「興味がない」と言える空気は日本と違う、と日本語教育者の著書を読んで思う。一つの動かし難い巨大な空気があるのではなく、個人の小さな空気が寄り集まって全体の空気を形成している。
2000分の1だった模型建築は時を経て1分の1となり建ち現れてきた。オリンピックの空気を作れる側にいる。2012年の夏はそれを存分に味わいたい。


Working on the Olympic project & creating its atmosphere

 Since later 2011, the economic crisis in Europe had come and my company in the U.K. started redundancy process. The short-term contact employees hadgone and we, permanent contract workers, started worrying. One day, my boss came to my desk with her audacious smile. It was really scaring her smile in that situation. But, she said, "Yama, your next project is on the Olympic site."
 When I joined this practice, I didn't have enough practical experience and speak English very well. Therefore, my carrier here began as a model maker. I made the huge, 1:2000 scale, Olympic master plan model for its bid.On 6th July 2005, the city of London won the candidate race which none of us expected. Even starting working as an architect, I hadn't involved in the Olympic projects. So, from colleagues, I had heard their excitements and complain of the once in a lifetime project.
 The third times Olympic host city, London, generates the main park in the east side of city. As being ecological games, there are some interesting venues such as beach volley ball coats at Buckingham palace and marathon swimming courses at Serpentine pond in Hyde Park.
 The construction site where I am working on is Greenwich Park which is famous for meridian. The venue is for equestrian and modern pentathlon
games. After games, the park will be restored as it was before. Therefore, our
 main task is to coordinate with the existing park condition. With having some showers, I, like a horse, walk through the up-and-down landscape for the cross country course. The running horses in the greenery British park should be beautiful scene.
 People say that British aren't excited enough about the Olympic Games.
Do you agree? There are several people could say, "Yes, I am interested in" and "No, I am not" without hesitation.
 It is different type of atmosphere from Japan which people can say, "No" against even the international event. People are not surrounded by single atmosphere. Individuals have own opinions and create whole atmosphere.
 The architecture became 1:1 scale building from 1:2000 scale model. In the summer 2012, I am on the side of creating atmosphere. So I enjoy it.
