ロンドンが直面する「オリンピックの盛り上がり」とは？

　１年前、オリンピックチケットの販売が始まった。住み慣れた街に６４年振りのスポーツの祭典がやってくる。同僚の多くがウェブ上で抽選に申し込んだが、なかなか手に入らない。それゆえ、祭りへの参加意識は薄い。また、経済が不安定な中、１年後の生活がどうなるかなんて分からない状況。正直それどころではなかった心境でのオリンピック。

　年が明けると勤務先でロンドン交通局のアンケートが実施された。「期間中の通勤ルートは？」「いつもより早めに出社しますか？」「お休みを取ったらどうですか？」など。スト、故障などで交通機関の混乱に慣れている僕らでも不安になる。
　いよいよ開幕まで１カ月を切った。街を彩るカラフルなバナー。通勤車内では発表当初、批判されていたロゴのピンバッジをつけたビジネスマン。駅構内には市内各競技場への案内を示すピンク色のサインとロンドン市長自らの「期間中は余裕を持って通勤するように！」と体育会系のノリでのアナウンス。ネズミの走る地下鉄駅でつながった無料ＷｉＦｉ。ビニールの強烈な匂いのする真新しいバス。昼休みに利用する食の市場で急ピッチに進む拡張工事の喧騒。昼休みの味が世界の舌を驚かすのはうれしいが、オリンピック価格への値上げは財布に痛い。
　中東紛争地におけるマスメディアの報道と現場の真実の乖離を語る本書を読んで大会期間中の盛り上がりを五感で楽しもうと決めた。オリンピックのある日常のわずかな変化を見逃さず、心の声をすくい取る。自分がどのように感じるかを基準にする。
　オリンピックが近づいてきてもテレビで煽（あお）るような演出も中吊り広告も見かけない。そもそも、この国には中吊り広告文化はない。そのメディア露出の多寡で盛り上がりを判断するのは安易だ。自己判断による静かな盛り上がりがある。皆が一つの方向を向いていない。多様なことを許容する社会の一側面。
　なんとかチケットを手に入れた同僚たちも、開幕を楽しみにしている。あと１週間。僕らの街に本当にオリンピックがやってくる。

What is excitement about Olympic Games?

One year ago, it started selling the Olympic tickets. It is for the first time in 64 years that the world sports event come to the city of London. Although many colleagues applied online, couldn't get it. Therefore, we couldn't participate in the event yet. Moreover, the economic situation was unstable. So, no one knew about the life next year. We, honestly, couldn't concern about Olympics.
After turning to the new year, Transport for London asked us to fill in the online survey. "What will be your commuting route during Olympic Games?" "Will you commute earlier than usual?"  "Willyou take days off?" etc. Although we get used to transportation chaos in our daily life, the questionnaires made us nervous how crowd it would be.
One month to go. Colourful banners wave on the street. A business man wears the Olympic logo pin badge criticized its design when appeared. The pink coloured venue signs are displayed in the station. The passionate announcement "Don't get caught out!" by Boris Johnson, Mayer ofLondon echoes at the platform. The free WIFI starts running in the tube station where mice are also running. The plastic smell is really strong in the brand-new bus. The contractors rush to complete the extension of the food market where foreign visitors would be surprised at its taste.
I have decided to enjoy Olympic Games with my senses rather through the media, TV, newspaper, radio and internets. I will pick up small and tiny differences and voice of heart during the games. It is important that we trust how we feel.
Even the game is just around the corner, the TV programs and advertising posters in the trains don't make a fuss. There is nohanging advertising poster in this countryanyway. It might be easier to judge its excitement by the amount of media exposure. In here, there is a calm excitement by self-judgment. Everyone doesn't go toward one direction. This is one aspect of the society which accepts diversity.
Colleagues have gotten their tickets and are looking forward to the games. One week to go. Olympic Games will come to our city.
